Neste texto examino o sentido da obrigatoriedade da promessa em Hume, especialmente no contexto da sua classificação da virtude do cumprimento das promessas como virtudes artificiais. Nisso a posição de Hume se distingue das posições aristotélica e kantiana em Anscombe e Herman respectivamente. Mas, o problema principal - que não há um motivo natural para o cumprimento das promessas- divide intérpretes de Hume: Cohon e Baier. Defendo, seguindo Baier, que, embora não haja o referido motivo natural, há uma paixão ou motivos eficientes - por certo, não naturais como o motivo natural que nos conduz ao cuidado dos nossos filhos - que é o auto-interesse esclarecido: ele é auto-interesse e assim real e natural num sentido; e é esclarecido porque no reconhecimento de sua correspondência nos outros se engendra um vínculo com o benefício comum, no sentido de "de todos e de cada um".

The Output Error Method is related to an optimization problem based on a multi-modal criterion. Iterative algorithms like the steepest descent are usually used to look for the global minimum of the criterion. This algorithms can get stuck at a local minimum. This paper presents sufficient conditions about the convergence of the steepest descent algorithm to the global minimum of the cost function. Moreover, it presents constraints to the input spectrum which ensure that the convergence conditions are satisfied. This constraints are convex and can easily be included in an experiment design approach to ensure the convergence of the iterative algorithms to the global minimum of the criterion.

It is by now well known that electron beams play an important role in generating radio emissions such as type II and type III radio bursts, commonly observed by spacecraft in the interplanetary medium. Electron beams streaming back from Earth's bow shock into the solar wind have been proposed as a possible source for the electron plasma waves observed by spacecraft in the electron foreshock. Recent observations suggest that during the natural evolution of the foreshock plasma, multiple electron beams could be injected over a period of time, losing their individual identity to coalesce into a single beam. In this work, we use an electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code &\#8220;KEMPO 1D, adapted&\#8221; to simulate two electron beams that are injected into a plasma at different times. The first beam disturbs the background plasma and generates Langmuir waves by electron beam-plasma interaction. Subsequently, another beam is inserted into the system and interacts with the first one and with the driven Langmuir waves to produce electromagnetic radiation. The results of our simulation show that the first beam can produce electrostatic harmonics of the plasma frequency, while the second beam intensifies the emission at the harmonics that is produced by the first one. The behavior of the second beam is strongly determined by the preexisting Langmuir wave electric fields. The simulations also show, as a result of the interaction between both beams, a clear nonlinear frequency shift of the harmonic modes as well as an increase of electromagnetic and kinetic energies of the wave-particle system.

Que a lei moral em Kant esteja assentada numa base a priori é conhecido e é objeto de intensa discussão. Que a Metafísica dos Costumes seja a articulação metafísica de um sistema de deveres na sua filosofia prática também é bem conhecido e muitas vezes contestado. Mas que os “princípios de aplicação” da Metafísica dos Costumes pertençam a ela mesma, e sejam consequentemente a priori, isso não é tão frequentemente reconhecido. Procuro mostrar neste trabalho o que isso significa e como isso ainda permite a Kant falar da aplicação dessa metafísica, geradora de deveres para seres como nós. A solução me parece estar na compreensão das volições e máximas dos seres humanos em termos que as tornam intrinsecamente passíveis de avaliações por parte da razão pura prática. Essa compreensão faculta a Kant a exposição de deveres (inclusive os de virtude), cuja natureza geral é a de serem exigências racionais morais estritas, para seres sensíveis imperfeitos como nós que vivemos num mundo como o nosso.

A kinetic formulation developed to analyze wave propagation in dusty plasmas, which takes into account the charge variation of the dust particles, is utilized to study the propagation and damping of Alfven waves propagating in oblique directions relative to the ambient magnetic field. A dusty plasma containing spherical and immobile dust grains in a homogeneous ambient magnetic field is considered. The charging process of the dust grains is assumed to be associated with the capture of electrons and ions by the dust particles during inelastic collisions between them and plasma particles. The dispersion relation and the damping rates of obliquely propagating Alfven waves are obtained assuming Maxwellian distributions for electrons and ions in equilibrium. For the numerical analysis of the dispersion relation we use the average values of the inelastic collision frequency as an approximation, instead of the momentum dependent expressions originally derived in the kinetic formulation, and study the modifications which the presence of the dust particles causes in both the propagation and the damping of the Alfven waves. In particular is discussed the competition between the different damping mechanisms, namely, the Landau damping and the damping associated with the dust charge variation, and it is shown that the inelastic collision frequency plays a pivotal role in the magnitude of the damping rates.

Este artigo pretende chamar a atenção para uma exigência a respeito do bom aluno de política, conforme apresentado por Aristóteles no livro I da Ética Nicomaquéia, a saber, ser educado em bons hábitos. O vicioso não é um bom aluno de política porque não é capaz nem mesmo de reconhecer a validade do discurso proposto por ela e não, simplesmente, porque não é capaz de agir em conformidade com esse discurso, como pretende T. Irwin. Reconhecer um argumento prático como bom é, necessariamente, ser motivado a agir conforme à sua conclusão. Aristóteles exige bons hábitos dos seus alunos porque eles são necessários para compreender praticamente o desenvolvimento dos seus argumentos. É essa a compreensão que Aristóteles pretende que seus alunos tenham do discurso político; é essa a compreensão que o vicioso não é mais capaz de ter.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Conhecimento. Bons hábitos.
