This paper presents the main contributions of the research group Virtual Design (ViD) to the learning process of Descriptive Geometry (DG) in line with the principles of project-based learning. First, the paper presents the theoretical framework that bases the main ViD initiatives applied to the learning of DG, including design-based learning and physical and virtual modelling. The initiatives presented include a learning cycle based on concrete and virtual experiences in the design context. These initiatives that feed the learning of DG are the result of academic research of the Virtual Design research group, also involving Masters and PhD projects, with repercussions on the development of new methods, new technologies and new products, and the quality of education.

Education systems are undergoing transformations in order to adapt their curriculum to develop skills that are required of professional from courses that have design disciplines. Also increasingly evident is the need for a transdisciplinary teaching that involves collaboration among different disciplines of the same science. In this context, this article focuses, by the case study of synthetic diamond particles, on the integration among Descriptive Geometry, Technical Drawing, Materials and Processes disciplines with the aid of CAD systems. Through this integration and a transdisciplinary teaching, it is possible to correlate the knowledge that involves three-dimensional modeling, the projection of objects and analysis of the geometric shape. The generated models represent an innovative feature for the process of teaching and learning in the disciplines that involve the design as it provides an effective contact between the student and the object of study through, the manufacturing experience and the concrete three-dimensional experience.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the feasibility of parameterization of custom basic molds, eliminating the need for making a mold for each user. This method uses the three-dimensional scanning to obtain the anthropometric measurements, and the user’s body silhouette and parameterize these measures, causing the production of a single basic mold is necessary to meet users with different anthropometric characteristics. A low-cost 3D scanner was used, Microsoft Kinect, to obtain the 3D model of the user’s body and the Grasshopper modeling algorithm for setting the mold. Thus, a research participant was scanned and, from your 3D model, anthropometric measurements were obtained for setting the mold. The final model was built and experienced by the participant for validation purposes. The results were satisfactory in showing high precision in anthropometric model produced. Thus, the study addressed brings important contribution to the development of products for clothing in areas as they provide flexibility in the basic mold production process and product measurements with high accuracy and hence increase the degree of comfort for the user.

The objective of this study is to analyze population distribution in the state of Pará in Brazil using data from the2010 Population Census in association with the land use and land cover data from TerraClass arranged in a statistical grid. The role of 113 Protected Areas (including 46 Indigenous Lands, 51 Sustainable Use Conservation Units and 16 Integral Protection Conservation Units) is analyzed from the standpoint of their demographic rural-urban gradients and in terms of their land use cover. Information on the use and cover of land in Protected Areas along with census data were incorporated into a statistical grid using GIS. The spatial relationship of information layers in the cells indicates that the state's population is highly concentrated in a few areas, a pattern that is reproduced to some extent in the Protected Areas (Gini coefficient for the distribution of households is higher than 0.9). The area of the Protected areas is less populated and retains a greater extension of forested areas, by comparison to the state. Despite having extensive segments devoid of occupied households and the largest expanse of forest coverage (57%) in the state, Protected Areas also have urban areas associated with other uses and land cover change. The results indicate that population dynamics and changes in the uses and covering of land are related in a broader manner, thereby suggesting the need for reflection on urbanization and changes in land use and land cover change within a more integrated approach.
