Duarte, J, Vieira LW, Marques AD, Schneider PS, Pumi G, Prass TS.  2021.  Increasing power plant efficiency with clustering methods and Variable Importance Index assessment. Energy and AI. 5:100084. AbstractWebsite

Power plant performance can decrease along with its life span, and move away from the design and commissioning targets. Maintenance issues, operational practices, market restrictions, and financial objectives may lead to that behavior, and the knowledge of appropriate actions could support the system to retake its original operational performance. This paper applies unsupervised machine learning techniques to identify operating patterns based on the power plant’s historical data which leads to the identification of appropriate steam generator efficiency conditions. The selected operational variables are evaluated in respect to their impact on the system performance, quantified by the Variable Importance Index. That metric is proposed to identify the variables among a much wide set of monitored data whose variation impacts the overall power plant operation, and should be controlled with more attention. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and k-means++ clustering techniques are used to identify suitable operational conditions from a one-year-long data set with 27 recorded variables from a steam generator of a 360MW thermal power plant. The adequate number of clusters is identified by the average Silhouette coefficient and the Variable Importance Index sorts nine variables as the most relevant ones, to finally group recommended settings to achieve the target conditions. Results show performance gains in respect to the average historical values of 73.5% and the lowest efficiency condition records of 68%, to the target steam generator efficiency of 76%.

Ikeda, H, Brito C, Wyart M.  2020.  Infinitesimal asphericity changes the universality of the jamming transition, 2020. Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment. 2020:033302.: IOP Publishing AbstractWebsite

The jamming transition of non-spherical particles is fundamentally different from the spherical case. Non-spherical particles are hypostatic at their jamming points, while isostaticity is ensured in the case of the jamming of spherical particles. This structural difference implies that the presence of asphericity affects the critical exponents related to the contact number and the vibrational density of states. Moreover, while the force and gap distributions of isostatic jamming present power-law behaviors, even an infinitesimal asphericity is enough to smooth out these singularities. In a recent work (Brito et al 2018 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. 115 11736–41), we have used a combination of marginal stability arguments and the replica method to explain these observations. We argued that systems with internal degrees of freedom, like the rotations in ellipsoids, or the variation of the radii in the case of the breathing particles fall in the same universality class. In this paper, we review comprehensively the results about the jamming with internal degrees of freedom in addition to the translational degrees of freedom. We use a variational argument to derive the critical exponents of the contact number, shear modulus, and the characteristic frequencies of the density of states. Moreover, we present additional numerical data supporting the theoretical results, which were not shown in the previous work.

Most of the literature evaluating dental implants focuses on implant survival, which is a limited proxy for the successful rehabilitation of patients with missing teeth. Success should include not only survival but also lack of mechanical, biological, and esthetics problems. A comprehensive review of local and systemic risk factors prior to implant placement will allow the tailoring of treatment planning and maintenance protocols to the patient's profile in order to achieve longitudinal success of the therapy. This review discusses the role of controlling different risk factors and prevention/treatment of peri-implant mucositis in order to avoid peri-implantitis. Although the literature addressing the topic is still scarce, the existing evidence shows that performing optimal plaque control and regular visits to the dentist seem to be adequate to prevent peri-implant lesions. Due to impossibility of defining a probing depth associate with peri-implant health, radiographic evaluations may be considered in the daily practice. So far, there is a strong evidence linking a past history of periodontal disease to peri-implant lesions, but this is not so evident for other factors including smoking and diabetes. The prevention of biological complications starts even before implant placement and include a broader analysis of the patient risk profile and tailoring the rehabilitation and maintenance protocols accordingly. It should be highlighted that the installation of implants does not modify the patient profile, since it does not modify genetics, microbiology or behavioral habits of any individual.

Versão a convite de um artigo homônimo para o italiano.

In 1995 the publication of Marleen Rozemond’s paper Descartes’s Case for Dualism has triggered the revival of the discussion on his argument in favor of the real distinction between body and soul among the Anglo-Saxon scholars. In particular the discussion then resumed was on the necessity of introducing a hidden premise (the so called the attribute premise) in order to regain its probatory character. This debate has reflected on the Cartesian studies in Brazil and my objective in this text is to bring to the debate two texts still unexplored related to this interpretative problem. My hypothesis is that the attempts to justify the thesis that the substance has exactly one principal attribute have not yet better succeeded because they underestimated the contribution brought about by the transformation of the notion of nature entailed by the introduction of the concept of principal attribute. Understanding the Cartesian proof of substantial dualism, and more particularly the “attribute premise”, would involve, I suggest, the thesis according to which the concept of principal attribute, insofar as it expresses the essence of the substance, is not – and cannot be – according to Descartes, an abstract universal, but rather a particular nature
